Employee Health Nurse
Job Requirements
Job Summary The Employee Health Nurse provides nursing support to the Employee Health Department by performing preplacement and annual assessments for employees and contracted individuals. The Nurse is responsible for the Workers' Compensation program at SJMC and presents information to newly hired employees during New Employee Orientation.
ADMINISTERS THE WORKERS' COMPENSATION PROGRAM FOR THE ORGANIZATION: Provides EH services to employees who are seen in the Emergency Room or in EH for revisits. Discusses injury state and work status with doctors and employees and sets appropriate course of action and follow-up. Reports to and or responds to physician and the supervisor regarding the status of the employee as appropriate. Tracks employee visits to EH and keeps monthly client utilization statistics. Coordinates the medical exam process by identifying appropriate physicians, obtaining medical release authorizations, notifying employee, receiving results and recommending appropriate action. Refers employee to WC Case Manager as necessary. Investigates and documents information on work-related injuries and processes required reports. Identifies workplace hazards and makes recommendations for preventive measures or corrective actions. Reviews all employee incidents (falls, burns, muscle strain, etc.) and provides follow-up as required. Assesses all employees returning to work in accordance with the Clearance For Duty Policy and issues the appropriate return to work authorization. Completes and maintains OSHA 200 Summary of Occupational Injuries and posts reports as required by law.
PROVIDES NURSING CARE AS IT PERTAINS TO THE EMPLOYEE HEALTH SERVICES SETTING: Performs pre-placement and annual assessments according to policy. Interprets and utilizes clinical data in the plan of care. Assesses employee for potential risk factors, develops preventive measure to address same. Recognizes and integrates employee needs and individualizes care. Monitors employee Medical Leaves of Absence and coordinates information with Employee Benefits representatives. Maintains supportive contact with employees during MLOA and provides advice and guidance regarding health care choices and behavior. Conducts health interviews/assessments on employees referred due to absenteeism, providing advice, guidance and follow-up referrals as appropriate. Adheres to infection prevention and control standards specific to employee care. Administers annual tuberculosis testing for all employees and conducts appropriate follow-up of positive results while ensuring compliance with OSHA requirements. Provides post-exposure surveillance for employees exposed to undiagnosed tuberculosis, needle stick and other exposures to infectious disease and provides follow-up care in accordance with established protocol and in consultation with physician. Counsels employees for preHIV testing as required in accordance with policy and federal law. Provides all employee vaccinations including MMR, HepB and Flu as required by policy and follows-up to ensure compliance. Documents activities according state, federal and local laws and regulations. Must be able to respond to emergency situations regarding employee illness or injury.
RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING AND DOCUMENTING PRE-PLACEMENT AND ANNUAL ASSESSMENTS: Performs assessment including taking history and vitals. Performs a vision screening and conducts collection of specimen for drug screening. Performs PPD injections and follow-up. Orders lab draws and gives post-appointment instructions. Completes paperwork and reports results and conducts follow-up as necessary. Maintains all employee records in accordance with state, federal and local regulations and organizational policy. Keeps statistics regarding assessment findings and enters data into appropriate log. Collaborates with physician when there is a questions as to whether the employee can perform the essential functions of the position. Notifies supervisor of recommendations when appropriate. Gives immunization and tracks repeat doses. Keeps adequate supply of materials for drug screens and various immunizations to ensure availability. Administers the drug screening and immunization programs in accordance with organizational policy.
Work Experience
- 2 year / Associate's Degree: Nursing (Required)
- 4 year / Bachelor's Degree: BSN (Preferred)
- Combination of relevant education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
- BLS Certification (Required)
- Rehabilitation Services Provider Certification (Required)
- State Registered Nurse License (Required)
- Certification in COHN TB skin testing (Preferred)
- Maryland Workers' Compensation Case Management Certification (Preferred)
- Experience and Skills
- 2 - 4 years Nursing in an Emergency Room or Med/Surg Setting (Required)
- 2 - 4 years Strong knowledge of Maryland Workers Compensation Law, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act, OSHA, CDC and TJC as well as Regulation Drug Testing procedures. (Required)
- 2 - 4 years Demonstrated experience in Venipuncture and HIV counseling (Preferred)
- 2 - 4 years Occupational or Emergency Department Experience (Preferred)
