Job Summary:

The Rollins' Hume House Child Development & Student Research Center (CDC) is seeking an Assistant Teacher to join their team

In addition to upholding all program and philosophical foundations of the Child Development & Student Research Center (CDC), Assistant Teachers support classroom operations and assist in delivering high-quality, developmentally appropriate programming for children ages 2-5. This role involves direct supervision of children, assistance with curriculum implementation and ongoing observations, and support of undergraduate students.

Daily Operations & Classroom Support
  • Contribute to the daily maintenance, cleanup, and routine care of the children and the center
  • Assist in setting up an inclusive learning environment for children and undergraduate students
  • Assist in planning and developing curricular activities each week in concert with teacher assistant
  • Assist in posting weekly curriculum in classroom and weekly newsletter for parents
  • Provide for children's needs in toileting, project work, problem solving situations, and general play
  • Attend all teacher meetings and required training during the school year
  • Complete 20 hours of in-service training each year. (10 hours required by DCF) and additional 10 hours according to needs
Child Interactions & Guidance
  • Provide consistent, respectful guidance during daily activities and projects
  • Interact at children's developmental level and scaffold learning experiences
  • Advocate for appropriate resolution to children's problems and support children learning of problem-solving skills
  • Act as a resource for the children, responding with clear explanations to support understanding
  • Engage in positive guidance techniques and utilize behavioral analysis strategies to help children learn appropriate behavior
  • Implement response to invention strategies and positive behavior support strategies to support children's success in social interactions
Staff Collaboration & Curriculum Support
  • Work collaboratively with Lead Teachers in the classroom and across the center to ensure organized daily routines
  • Assist Lead Teachers in conducting ongoing written and verbal daily observations of children, and taking photographs and videos to document children's learning
  • Assist Lead Teachers in analyzing children's development through ongoing observations and documentation
  • Support Lead Teachers in ensuring developmental needs of all children are met across all domains
  • Display children's work to make learning visible to families and children
Undergraduate Student Support
  • Model positive, kind and developmentally appropriate teacher interactions with children
  • Demonstrate positive behavior support techniques
  • Assist with planning activities and interactions with children that demonstrate developmental skills/goals of the children for student observation
  • Support student interactions and provide engagement opportunities with children
Parent & Family Communication
  • Maintain daily verbal contact with caregivers at drop-off or pick-up times
  • Follow individualized plans for children's behavioral, toileting, and developmental needs
  • Support and respect each family's culture, ethnicity, language, socio-economic level, and family structure
  • Support Lead Teachers in preparing developmental summary (according to the Child Observation Record) of each child twice each year
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all family information
  • Encourage family participation in CDC activities

Minimum Qualifications
& Education:


  • A.A. or A.S. degree in Early Childhood Education, Education or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working with children aged 2-5 in a school setting
  • All DCF 45-hour required trainings and 5-hour Literacy Training completed prior to start date with DCF training transcript provided
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification (must obtain within 90 days of start date)
  • Background check including fingerprints and all DCF paperwork cleared by DCF Background Screening Clearinghouse prior to hire date
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Understanding of child development principles
  • Ability to communicate effectively with department directors, lead teachers, assistant teachers, parents, and undergraduate students
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Ability to work effectively with young children and undergraduate students
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain daily operations
  • Knowledge of a college or university environment preferred

Work Schedule:
  • Full-time schedule Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, 37.5 hours per week.
  • Flexible schedules or overtime may be required to meet the demands of the academic calendars.

Work Environment:
  • This is a campus-based position working in Winter Park, FL.
  • Front-facing customer service position.
  • Ability to:
    • Lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
    • Observe and maintain safety of children in various center locations, including playgrounds, on and off campus walks and group events
    • Walk long distances on campus field trips
    • Work in varying outdoor temperatures for sustained periods
    • Move physically around floor and classroom areas without assistance
    • Adapt to changing daily staffing needs
  • Position requires changing diapers and assisting children with toileting
